The Absolute Best Way to Learn Swedish (Part 1)

So what is the absolute best way to learn Swedish?

Well before I tell you what the best way to learn Swedish is, let me give you a list of the 5 WORST WAYS to Swedish…

Just be forewarned, you may get angry with me for saying some of the things I am gonna say, but sometimes the truth hurts. People don’t want to feel stupid or gullible. They don’t want to admit that they have wasted piles of hard earned cash and years of their life investing in inferior learning methods. Don’t feel too bad though, because I have also wasted my time and money on all of these. I understand where you are coming from. I have learned the hard way and now I am here to help you save as much time and money as I can. So before you write me hate mail, just know that I am honestly trying to help you.

1) Buying and Reading Expensive Grammar Books

Reading a book on swedish grammar might cure your insomnia, but it will not help you learn Swedish very effectively. Grammar books are boring and confusing. They overwhelm you with loads of arbitrary rules before you even have any kind of foundational point of reference in the language. These books are produced solely for use as reference material in assisting people who already know the language quite well. You didn’t learn your mother tongue by reading a grammar book, so why would you try and learn your new language by reading a grammar book?

Save your money and don’t buy a swedish grammar book until you have already learned to speak the language fluently.

2) Buying Fancy and Expensive Computer Programs

I don’t want to mention any names, but most of you will know what I am talking about. These programs cost thousands of dollars, eat up a lot of memory on you hard drive, and teach you almost nothing. Yes, they look very impressive but that’s about it. I promise you however that even if you master the entire program you will still not be able to speak or understand the language very well at all.

You might learn a few new words but you will only be able to remember them when you are using the program and looking at the pictures they are showing you. These programs do nothing to make the language your own or increase your fluency. You can think of these computer language programs like a video game. Mastering a tennis video game will not make you much better at playing tennis in the real world, right? So why do you think mastering a Swedish video game will help you speak Swedish in the real world? It doesn’t work. Believe me, I have wasted money on these programs myself and they don’t work at all. I have never met anyone who became fluent in a language by using one of these ungodly expensive computer programs.

3) Wasting Your Time With Flashcards

“Oh my god! He’s not going to attack flashcards now is he? Everybody knows flashcards are effective!”Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but flashcards are a huge waste of time. I also know many of my students use flashcards and that is part of the reason why I am writing this. I am trying to save them time and help them learn effectively. I’m sorry if you feel like a kid who just learned that Santa Claus isn’t real, but this is the truth. Flashcards will waste your valuable time and slow down your learning.”How can you say this Prof Paul? I use flashcards all the time and I see improvement everyday.”Exactly, you see improvement everyday with your flashcards ,but how much more fluent have you gotten in your Swedish. If you stop doing your flashcards for two weeks, will you still remember all the words you “memorized”? Of course not, because (just like the computer game), you are only learning the words in the context of the flashcards. However the real world doesn’t work like flashcards, so now ask yourself… were those words ever really “memorized” in the first place? For instance, when was the last time you used the word “thimble” in a sentence? What about the words “anchor” or “starfish”? These aren’t words you use very often, but even if you didn’t hear the word “starfish” for 25 years you would still never forget what it was. Why is that? Was it because you “memorized” it from a flashcard as a kid? Probably not, it was because you used the word in REAL LIFE situations several times at different time intervals.Practicing flashcards will make you better at playing the game of flashcards, but you have to remember it’s just a game, nothing more. It is never gonna make you fluent in Swedish. Does that mean that flashcards are 100% useless? No, I’m not saying that. They do provide entertainment. You might even retain a few words in your long term memory, but the majority of your “memorized” words will never be stored in the part of your brain that is used for speaking and understanding a language. It will be stored in the same part of your brain that helps you play games.

You have to bring Swedish into your everyday REAL life and make it a part of your being. The only program on the planet that teaches you this is the  “Find Your Flow” course at www.SpeakSwedishStupid.com . It’s the first and LAST program you will ever need to learn Fluent Swedish!!!
