Ruta

Here’s Your Learn Swedish Word of the Day :)

(en) ruta -(rutor, -na) – square; box; pane; panel; zone; grid; rue;
Fönstret saknar en _ruta._ (The window is missing a pane.)

Alright, so this isn’t the most exciting word that I have ever written
about, but it is however quite essential to familiarize yourself with. The
word “r_uta_” can be used in many different contexts and can be confusing if
we don’t take the time to get acquainted with the word.

The first time I encountered the word, I was filling in some forms
(blanketter) at the Swedish Embassy in Los Angeles. I was asked to check
(tick) the “rutor” next to the statements that applied to me. If you have
ever been to the doctor or Department of Motor Vehicle then I am sure that
you are familiar with such checklists. To the left of each option, there is
a “box” or “square” which one is to check (tick) when appropriate. Swedes
refer to these little boxes as “rutor”.

When referring to boxes this word is almost exclusively used in the abstract
. An actual cardboard box is called a “_kartong_” or “_låda_”, while the
geometric concept of a square is called a “fyrkant” (four-corner). Whilst
observing a certain area of land or travel zone on a map one may abstractly
refer to them as “rutor” but more concretely the word “_zoner_” (zones) is
used. There is even a poison ivy like plant over here in Europe called a
“rue” which the Swedes refer to as “ruta” or “vinruta” (wine rue).

So as you can see this word is applicable in many different situations and
learning how to recognize it in context can come in handy. If you wanna
learn all the oddities of the swedish language then signing up for
the “Find Your Flow” course at www.SpeakSwedishStupid.com would be a
smart choice. It’s the first and LAST program you will ever need to
learn Fluent Swedish!!!

Ha det bra!
